Closed up.
--It really seems that the curse of speculation gets into everything attempted for the benefit of the people.
A Provision Association was organized a few weeks since, and had commenced to work beneficially for the poor when it was closed, and the reason is thus stated in the
Danville Monitor.
A few individuals have crept into the association, ostensibly with charitable designs, but really for the purpose of procuring goods for their own benefit at rates below the market price; and, with this view, instead of permitting the poor to deal upon their surplus stock, they have divided it out among those who really do not need it, but who have promised to use it for the benefit of the owners.
By this trick the regulations of the association are evaded, and instead of dealing to the extent of $100 a week, they are enabled to deal to the extent of $400 or $500 a week.
