ἔμβι^-ος , ον,
A.having life, [“Ζηνὸς] ἐργαζομένου ἔμβια τὰ ὑπὸ τῷ αἰθέρι” Philostr.Her.2.19; tenacious of life, established, of trees which will bear transplanting, Thphr.CP5.6.5; of cuttings, ib.3.5.3 (Comp.); but εἰ σπέρμα ἔ. γένοιτο if the seed should germinate, ib.5.4.5, cf. Antipho Soph.15; τὸ ἔ. their living and growing, of trees, Ael.VH 13.1.
2. ἡ ἔ. ὑγρότης the moisture necessary to life, Thphr.CP1.1.3; “αἷμα ἔ. τῇ γῇ πινόμενον” Philostr.Im.1.24.
II. lasting one's whole life, “ἔ. τιμωρία” D.C.78.12.
III. ἔ. γενέσθαι recover consciousness after a swoon, Longus 2.30.
