Calamistrum

and Calamister. A curling-iron, so called from its resemblance to a reed (calamus), and used among the Romans as early as the time of Plautus (Curc. iv. 4, 21). It was sometimes employed by men, though such were considered effeminate. Figuratively, the word denotes an excess of literary ornament (Iul. 56).
