Biddle, Clement, 1740-1814

Military officer; born in Philadelphia, Pa., May 10, 1740; was descended from one of the early Quaker settlers in western New Jersey, and when the war for independence broke out he assisted in raising a company of soldiers in Philadelphia. He was deputy quartermaster-general of Pennsylvania militia in 1776, and commissary of forage under General Greene. On the organization of the national government he was appointed United States marshal for Pennsylvania. He died in Philadelphia, Pa., July 14, 1814.
