Nichols, Francis 1737-1812

Military officer; born in Crieve Hill, Enniskillen, Ireland, in 1737; came to America in 1769; entered the Revolutionary army in Pennsylvania in June, 1775; was taken prisoner at Quebec, Dec. 31, 1775, but declined to surrender his sword to any one but an officer, and then only after a promise that it should be returned when he should be freed. In August, 1776, this promise was fulfilled, and his sword was restored, with all the American officers present to bear witness. He later became a brigadier-general. He died in Pottsville, Pa., Feb. 13, 1812.
