A play on the name of a certain dissolute person called here, and
in Catul. 105.1ff.; Catul. 114.1ff.; and Catul. 115.1ff., Mentula. On his
identification with the Mamurra mentioned in Catul. 29.1ff.; Catul.
41.1ff.; Catul. 43.1ff.;
and Catul. 57.1ff., cf. Catul. 29.13n. and Intr. 73. The point of the
epigram is, ‘You say that Mentula is an adulterer. Why,
of course. How could he be otherwise with such a name as his.
'Tis as natural as for a pot to gather in potherbs.’
[2] hoc est quod dicunt: of a proverbial expression; cf. Catul. 100.3.
