μέγα φρονῶν . . . ἐπί, ‘priding himself on’; cp. σεμνύνεσθαι ἐπί (§ 74). ὑφ᾽ αὑτῷ ποιούμενος, ‘attaching to himself.’ τῷ πολλοῖς χαλεπαίνειν, ‘by a frequent display of harshness,’ lit. ‘by being harsh to many’. ὑπερβάλλειν: see note on ὑπερβολήν, § 1. ἡγούμενος τῶν ἡδονῶν, ‘controlling his pleasures,’ lit. ‘leading’. ἡγεῖσθαι like the Latin ducere means (1) to ‘lead’, in which case it is followed by a genitive, or dative when used of an army or fleet (never in Isocrates); (2) ‘to consider’ (often followed by double accusative, as in ad N. 25, 28, &c., N.
