[203] Λύκειε Apollo, properly the god of light（λυκ）, whose image, like that of Artemis, was sometimes placed before houses （ Soph. El. 637 “Φοῖβε προστατήριε,” Aesch. Seven 449 “προστατηρίας ι Ἀρτέμιδος”）, so that the face should catch the first rays of the morning sun（δαίμονες ... ἀντήλιοι Aesch. Ag. 519）: then, through Λύκειος being explained as λυκοκτόνος （Soph. El. 7）, Apollo the Destroyer of foes: Aesch. Seven 145 “Λύκει᾽ ἄναξ, Λύκειος γενοῦ ι στρατῷ δαΐῳ.” Cp. below, 919.
