[57] Lit., “void of men, when they do not dwell with thee in the city”: ἀνδρῶν depends on ἔρημος, of which μὴ ξυνοικούντων ἔσω is epexegetic. Rhythm and Sophoclean usage make this better than to take ἀνδρῶν μὴ ξυνοικ. ἔ. as a gen. absol. Cp. Soph. Aj. 464 “γυμνὸν φανέντα τῶν ἀριστείων ἄτερ”: Soph. Phil. 31 “κενὴν οἴκησιν ἀνθρώπων δίχα”: Lucret. 5.841 muta sine ore etiam, sine voltu caeca.
