At the battle of Waterloo a Frenchman who speaks a little English, cried out, ‘"Quarter, quarter !"’ to one of the Forty Second Highlanders. ‘"The muckle de'll may quarter you for me,"’ was the reply. ‘"I had nae time to quarter ye; ye maun e'en be content to be cut in twa;"’ and he suited the action to the word.
