St. Joseph's academy.

--The distribution of prizes and testimonials at this academy took place on Thursday last in presence of a large number of spectators, who, not withstanding the incessant rain, assembled at the appointed hour to witness the exercises. There were about seventy scholars present, all entering the hall in double file to the music of the pianos. Rev Bishop Magill was present, and distributed the prizes to the successful competitors.

The crowning honors were the first of the exercises. Each recipient coming forward, knelt on a cushion, and the Bishop placed the crown on the head.

The first crown were composed of full blown and variegated roses and other flowers, the second crowns were green wreaths, with a few flowers interwoven, while the first crowns of the junior circle were composed only of evergreens.

The gold medal was awarded to Miss M. Bisset, and the silver medal to Miss Bessie Horner.

"Childhood's Hours," solo, dust, and chards, composed by Prof. Rosier, and dedicated to the pupils of the academy, was sung with much spirit by the whole school.

There were many pieces sung and played by the pupils. The execution in all was excellent, and did the highest credit to both scholars and teachers.

A vocal duet, by Misses L. Northrop and M. Baratta, was heard with much pleasure, and was sweetly sung.

"La Jeune Martyre," by Miss M. Barrett, was one of the best solos sung during the performance. This young lady seems to possess much musical talent, and was awarded a first class premium for her proficiency in vocal music.

We would also mention a beautiful instrumental trio, performed by Misses Northrop, Samanni and Baratts, a very sweet instrumental solo by Miss Betti Horner, and a grand instrumental duet by Misses L. McCarr, B. Horner M. Bassett, and K. Walthall.

At the close of the exercises, a little girl, Miss Louise Mallory, daughter of the Secretary of the Navy, went forward and delivered a short address, in most inimitable, yet unpretending style, setting forth the claims of the "little folks," who were pushed aside by the older ones in their competition for prizes.--She then presented the Reverend Bishop with a banquet of flowers as a token of esteem and love from the smaller scholars.

The Bishop replied appropriately, but briefly, and closed by exhorting the scholars to pray for peace, early and honorable peace.

The exercises throughout were highly interesting and entertaining, and the pupils conducted themselves with a quiet decorum which is not generally observed in scenes of distribution. The present session of the school is now closed, and re-opens on the 1st Monday, of September next.
