AROSFA GAREG
Wales.
This large marching camp lies on the Carmarthenshire-Brecknock border
at SN802263. Its position testifies to the activity of a
sizable Roman army unit operating at the W end of the
Usk corridor in S Wales. The camp was first located by
aerial photography in 1955. Despite the moorland conditions the ramparts were accurately laid out; they measure 503 by 308 m, enclosing an area of 18 ha. Two inturned claviculae survive. Excavation revealed a rampart
3.5 m wide, built of mixed earth and stone with a turf
cheek. Local conditions explain the absence of any ditch.
