CAPPUCK
Roxburghshire, Scotland.
A small
Roman fort which guarded the point where Dere Street
crossed the Oxnam Water, 19 km SE of Newstead (q.v.).
There are no surface remains, but excavation has shown
that in the first two periods of occupation (ca. A.D. 80-100) it measured 87 by 65.4 m overall (0.68 ha). In the
third period (ca. A.D. 140-155) it measured 90.9 by 78 m
(0.72 ha), but finally (ca. A.D. 158-180) it was reduced
to 78 by 75.6 m (0.6 ha). The only internal buildings
identified were those of the 2d c. occupation, comprising
a small granary, a bath house, and a courtyard building
resembling a praetorium, all on one side of the central
street, with partial remains of barracks on the other. An
inscribed tablet records work done here by Legio XX.
