MOUZON
Ardennes, France.
Gallo-Roman
sanctuary on the Flavier hill on the boundary between the
departments of Ardennes and Meuse, S-SE of Sedan. The
sanctuary stood in a rectangular enclosure, three sides
of which have been cleared. The cella is surrounded by
rough stone paving of two different periods, and has a
floor of stone aggregate with a pit in the middle. The
entrance is to the NE; the opposite wall of the enclosure,
to the SW, was the rear wall of a portico. A number of
coins have been found in the cella, and hundreds of
miniature arms (swords, daggers, shields, all ex-votos
offered to the presiding god) against the outer walls and
scattered about the courtyard. Pottery is similarly abundant. The sanctuary had two main periods of activity, the 1st and the 3d-4th c. A.D. The finds are in the Sedan museum.
