Segestes

A Cheruscan chieftain, the opponent of Arminius. He warned the Roman general, Varus, of the movements of Arminius, but the warning was disregarded. (See Arminius; Varus.) In B.C. 14, Segestes was forced by his followers into a war with the Romans, but afterwards made peace with them and was allowed to live at Narbonne for the rest of his life (Tac. Ann. i. 55-59; Flor. iv. 12).
