A general term for any place in which beasts, fowls, fish, or any kind of animals were kept alive, either for the purposes of gain or pleasure; a park for game, a rabbit-warren, fish-pond, decoy, preserve for oysters, etc. (Gell. ii. 20; Pliny , Pliny H. N. viii. 50Pliny H. N., 78; id. ix. 81).
