HALMYRIS

HALMYRIS (Ἅλμυρις), a salt.lake, south of the southernmost mouth of the Danube. It was properly a part of the Euxine, with which it communicated by a narrow channel. It extended from the town of Istrus in the south, nearly as far as Aegyssus on the Danube. On its western coast existed a town of the name of Halmyris. (Plin. Nat. 4.24; Procop. de Aed. 4.7; Philostorg. 10.10; Niceph. Hist. Eccles. 12.29.)
