PARO´PUS
PARO´PUS (
Πάρωπος: Eth.
Paropinus), a town of Sicily mentioned by Polybius (
1.24) during the First Punic War, in a manner that seems to indicate its site between Panormus and Thermae (
Termini).
It is not noticed by any of the geographers except Pliny, who mentions it in his list of the stipendiary towns of Sicily (
Plin. Nat. 3.8. s. 14); and in another passage (
lb. § 92) speaks of the island of Ustica as lying “contra Paropinos.” This is all the clue we have to its position, and its exact site cannot therefore be determined.
