Thieves about.

--A number of the Richmond merchants have been extensively victimized lately by practiced thieves. A narration of the modus operandi of these clever operators may put others on their guard against future incursions by the same class. They hunt in couples and hardly ever enter a store that does not contain an iron safe. On inquiring for an article the proprietor being shorthanded will step back to show it. One of the thieves retires with him, the other operates on the safe drawer and generally with success. One merchant of this city by this mode lately lost $1,500, another $500, and another $450. In the last named instance the drawer of the safe was open and a gentleman sat in front reading a paper, but not looking up he did not see the grab made. When the owner discovered his bank notes gone the thieves were out of sight.
