MÜNSTER-SARMSHEIM
Rhineland Palatinate, Germany.
A mosaic floor from a Roman villa
(now covered by a house at Römerstrasse 2) has been
partly excavated. The middle field of the mosaic (18.9 x
13.7 m) depicts Sol standing on a quadriga. He is surrounded by the signs of the Zodiac. The remaining surface is covered with black-and-white geometric patterned
squares; a frieze of tendrils forms the border. The middle field of the mosaic is in Bonn (Landesmuseum); parts
of the black-and-white mosaic are in Bad Kreuznach
Museum and in the parish church of SS. Peter and Paul,
Müaster-Sarsheim. Preserved under this church is a
section of the aqueduct that supplied water to the Roman
villa, now buried.
