Tabellarius

A letter-carrier or courier, employed by private persons to carry letters and messages (Ad Fam. xii. 12; xiv. 22). Ship captains often carried foreign letters and the tabellarii of the provincial governors and of the publicani (q. v.); also, as a favour, they often served private individuals (Ad Att. v. 15; id. 19). See also Cursus Publicus; Epistola.
