BADUHENNAE LUCUS
BADUHENNAE LUCUS “ the grove of Baduhenna,” a forest in the country of the Frisians. (
Tac. Ann. 4.73.) It is believed by some to be the same as the modern
Holtpade, which forms part of the forest of
Levenwalde in
West-Friesland, while others identify it with the modern
Veluwe. The grove was no doubt a sacred one, and may have owed its name to a divinity of the name of Baduhenna, whose altar it contained. (M. Alting,
Notit. Bat. et Fris. Antiq. i. p. 15; v. Wersebe,
Die Völker Teutschl. p. 103.)
