BADUHENNAE LUCUS

BADUHENNAE LUCUS “ the grove of Baduhenna,” a forest in the country of the Frisians. (Tac. Ann. 4.73.) It is believed by some to be the same as the modern Holtpade, which forms part of the forest of Levenwalde in West-Friesland, while others identify it with the modern Veluwe. The grove was no doubt a sacred one, and may have owed its name to a divinity of the name of Baduhenna, whose altar it contained. (M. Alting, Notit. Bat. et Fris. Antiq. i. p. 15; v. Wersebe, Die Völker Teutschl. p. 103.)
