COMPLU´TUM
COMPLU´TUM (
Alcalá de Henares), a town of the Carpetani, in Hispania Tarraconensis, on the high road from Emerita to Caesaraugusta. (
Itin. Ant. pp. 436, 438.)
It was a
civitas stipendiaria, and belonged to the
conventus of Carthago Nova. (
Plin. Nat. 3.3. s. 4.)
It is not certain whether it stood on the exact site of
Alcalá, or on the hill of
Zulema, on the opposite side of the river
Henares. Its name has become famous in modern times for the Complutensian Polyglott, published at
Alcalá under the auspices of Cardinal Ximenes.
