ECRON
ECRON (
Ἀκκάρων), one of the 5 cities of the Philistines (1
Sam. 5.10, 11, 6.17)t in the northern border of Judah (
Josh. 15.11.); but assigned to the children of Dan (19.43.), and accordingly ascribed to that tribe in Eusebius (
Onomast. s. v.), where St. Jerome adds “ut ego arbitror in tribu Juda.” They place it between Azotus and Jamnia to the east;. and St. Jerome mentions that it was sometimes supposed to be identical with Strato's Tower, afterwards Caesareia--a manifest and inexplicable error. Its site is preserved by the modern village of
Akir, SSW. of Ramleh in the great plain. (Robinson,
Bib. Res. vol. iii. pp. 22--24.
