MAXE´RA

MAXE´RA (Μαξήρα, Ptol. 6.9.2; Amm. Marc. 23.6), a river of Hyrcania, which flowed into the Caspian sea. Pliny calls it the Maxeras (6.16. s. 18). It is not certain with which modern river it is to be identified, and geographers have variously given it to the Tedjin, the Babul, or the Gurgan. If ammianus, who speaks of it in connection with the Oxus, could be depended on, it would appear most probable that it was either the Atrek or the Gurgan. The people dwelling along this river were called Maxerae. (Ptol. 6.9.5.)
