SACCO´PODES

Eth. SACCO´PODES (Σακκοπόδες), according to Strabo, a name given to the people of Adiabene in Assyria (xvi. p. 745). There has been a great dispute among learned men as to this name, which does not appear to be a genuine one. Bochart has suggested Saucropodes, (Σαυκρόποδες). On the whole, however, it would seem that the emendation of Tzschukke is the best, who reads Σαυλόποδες. (Groskurd, ad Strab. vol. ii. p. 225.)
