[917] Ἔρυκος: Virgil says that it was Aeneas who founded the temple to Venus on Mt. Eryx in Sicily (Aen. 5. 759); Diod. (4. 83) says that it was founded by Eryx, a son of Aphrodite and Butes, but speaks of Butes as βασιλεύς τις ἐγχώριος. Venus is often called 'Erycina' in Lat. poetry.
