April 25th, Voted, to repay to citizens of the town the amounts they had severally subscribed and paid for recruiting purposes. May—, Voted, to raise one thousand dollars for recruiting purposes, and to pay to certain recruits who had been credited to the town the sum of one hundred dollars each. July 5th, The town voted to raise two thousand dollars, and to pay volunteers a bounty of one hundred and twenty-five dollars. August 27th, Voted, to pay a bounty to each volunteer enlisting to the credit of the town one hundred and twenty-five dollars in gold; the selectmen to raise the money in such manner as they should think best. November 8th, Voted, to borrow two thousand dollars to pay bounties to volunteers. 1865. January 24th, The selectmen were authorized to recruit fifteen more men, and to borrow money sufficient to pay each a bounty of one hundred and twenty-five dollars, and to make up to those who had previously enlisted the same amount. March 6th, The selectmen were authorized to borrow a sum not exceeding three thousand dollars to fill the quota of the town in anticipation of another call for men. May 20th, Voted, to raise two thousand dollars to repay individuals the amounts they had voluntarily advanced for procuring volunteers. Shirley furnished one hundred and forty-two men for the war, which was a surplus of eleven over and above all demands. Four were commissioned officers. The whole amount of money raised and expended by the town for war purposes, exclusive of State aid, was thirteen thousand seven hundred and fourteen dollars and twenty-three cents ($13,714.23). The amount of money raised and appropriated by the town during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $211.96; in 1862, $1,308.97; in 1863, $1,588.86; in 1864, $1,407.15; in 1865, $1,000.00. Total amount, $5,516.94.
