August 20th, Voted, to pay a bounty of one hundred and twenty-five dollars ‘to each of thirty-nine men to fill the quota of the town.’ December 14th, The selectmen were authorized ‘to procure all the volunteers they might think the town will need to fill quotas under future calls.’ Spencer furnished three hundred and nineteen men for the war, which was a surplus of thirty-two over and above all demands. Nine were commissioned officers. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was twenty-seven thousand one hundred and one dollars and seventy cents ($27,101.70). The amount of money paid by the town for State aid to soldiers' families during the war, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $1,856.54; in 1862, $4,477.63; in 1863, $5,626.33; in 1864, $7,206.91; in 1865, $4,362.51. Total amount, $23,529.92.
