[94] dollars for State aid to soldiers' families. November 3d, The selectmen were instructed to use whatever money may be received from the State, as the proportion of Otis of bounty-money paid to volunteers, ‘to cancel the indebtedness of the town for the same, and for no other purpose.’ 1864. March 7th, The selectmen were directed to pay ‘the same bounty to colored men enlisting to the credit of the town, as we pay to white men.’ May 9th, The bounty for three-years volunteers was fixed at one hundred and twenty-five dollars. The selectmen were authorized to borrow two thousand dollars for recruiting purposes, ‘and to refund to the ten drafted men who entered the service or paid commutation-money, each, the sum of one hundred dollars.’ June 24th, The selectmen were authorized to borrow three thousand dollars for recruiting purposes. August 31st, Voted, ‘that the agents of the town for recruiting be directed to pay four-tenths of the cost of a substitute to any enrolled militia-man of said town who will put a substitute into the army, said substitute to answer on the present quota of the town; said payments not to exceed four hundred dollars for a three-years man, three hundred for a two-years man, and one hundred for a one-year man.’ Fifteen hundred dollars were appropriated for this purpose. December 1st, The treasurer was instructed to borrow two thousand dollars for recruiting purposes, provided the men subject to draft raise five hundred dollars.1 1865. March 6th, The selectmen were authorized to borrow whatever money was necessary to pay State aid to the soldiers' families. Otis furnished one hundred and thirteen men for the war, which was a surplus of eleven over and above all demands. One was a commissioned officer. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was thirteen thousand seven hundred and forty-one dollars and seventy-four cents ($13,741.74). The amount of money raised and expended by the town for the payment of State aid to the families of soldiers during the
