[607] each a bounty of one hundred and fifty dollars; this was raised to one hundred and seventy-five dollars by private subscription; a committee of one from each school district was chosen ‘to encourage men to enlist.’ August 23d, A bounty of one hundred dollars was voted to be paid to each person enlisting for nine months; to which five dollars were added by private subscription.

1863. Nothing of general interest was transacted by the town in regard to military matters during this year.

1864. June 27th, August 3d, and November 12th, legal town-meetings were held and measures adopted to furnish men for military service. A bounty of one hundred and twenty-five dollars was allowed to each volunteer enlisting to the credit of the town; this system was kept up until the end of the war.

Auburn furnished ninety-seven men for the military service, which was a surplus of five over and above all demands. Two were commissioned officers. The total amount of money raised and expended by the town for war purposes, exclusive of State aid, was four thousand five hundred and thirty-five dollars ($4,535.00). In addition to this $3,680.00 were raised by private subscription.

The amount of money raised and expended by the town for State aid to soldiers' families during the war, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $159.71; in 1862, $975,49; in 1863, $1,267.23; in 1864, $1,654.42; in 1865, $1,000.00. Total amount, $5,056.85.
