The ladies' defence Committee.
We understand that the patriotic ladies who constitute the "defence committee," with the view of increasing that most effective branch of our naval service — iron- clad steamers — will hold another meeting in this city today.
These meetings are, we believe, secret, as they certainly are sacred; but the determination of the noble Southern women who give them animation is all the more clearly expressed by this method of conducting the glorious task.
They will thereby act with more effective energy, and the purpose they have in view requires all the caution thus evinced.
Ladies who devote themselves to such efforts never fail indeed, ladies never attempt any good which they do not achieve, and the history of triumphant
Rome, of struggling
Greece, or of aching
Sparta — bay, of the whole world of heroic nations — is full of examples of the powers of female prowess similarly exercised.
We have every confidence, then, in the consummation of the work they attempt.
We are glad to note the fact that the owner of the musical marvel, Blind Tom, has volunteered a benefit to aid their efforts, and we presume his example is one which will be cheerfully followed by all the other amusement managers who have it in their power to contribute materially to this holy cause.
The ladies, we are told, contemplate consulting with some of the most distinguished officers of our navy.
They are in earnest, and mean to leave no means untried to further their object.
It is rumored that an officer, whose name is nobly associated with the late naval engagement at
Hampton Roads, will be tendered the honor of conducting the work they are perfecting.
