[3] For he brought forward a convincing reason, made clear by the testimony of many persons, namely, that four days before Silvanus assumed [p. 159] the badges 1 of empire, he paid the soldiers and in Constantius' name exhorted them to be brave and loyal. From which it was clear that if he were planning to appropriate the insignia of a higher rank, he would have bestowed so great a quantity of gold as his own gift.
