percutimur caput, ‘we are smitten on the head,’ but the idiom nearest to this reflective use (cf. XIII. 688) is ‘we get our heads struck.’ In Homer ( Od.X. 388-96) the counterchange is effected by a drug only; but there is the detail, which Ovid has not reproduced, that when restored they are “νεώτεροι πάρος ἦσαν, καὶ πολὺ καλλίονες καὶ μείζονες εἰσοράασθαι”.
