[543] borrow money to pay the same. September 10th, Voted, to pay a bounty of one hundred dollars to each soldier belonging to Duxbury who has enlisted without receiving a bounty.

1863. No action of the town appears to have been necessary during this year in order to fill the demands made by the Government for more men.

1864. March 7th, Voted, to raise by taxation a sum not exceeding five thousand dollars to pay bounties to volunteers, and to refund money which had already been applied to that purpose, and to pay citizens who had advanced money not to exceed one hundred and twenty-five dollars for each volunteer enlisted; this payment to be made if the Legislature shall pass a bill making it legal.1 April 4th, Voted, to authorize the selectmen to borrow thirty-eight hundred and sixty-three dollars to refund to citizens the money they had contributed to encourage recruiting. August 20th, Voted, to pay a bounty of one hundred and twenty-five dollars to drafted men who shall be credited to the quota of the town. September 17th, The selectmen were authorized to pay the same bounty to men in the navy who are credited to the town.

Duxbury furnished two hundred and seventy-nine men for the war, which was a surplus of five over and above all demands. Five were commissioned officers. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town for war purposes, exclusive of State aid, was thirty thousand six hundred and sixty-one dollars and nine cents ($30,661.09).

The amount raised and expended by the town during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861,$1,230.52; in 1862, $5,090.54; in 1863, $7,618.50; in 1864, $4,789.40; in 1865, $2,500.00. Total amount, $21,228.96.
