The amount raised and expended by the town for aid to soldiers' families, and afterwards reimbursed to it by the State, was as follows: In 1861, 00; in 1862, $291.96; in 1863, $1,024.00; in 1864, $1,819.20; in 1865, $1,221.07. Total, $4,356.23. The ladies of Brewster in 1862 organized a Soldiers' Aid Society, which continued in operation until the close of the war, and did much good.
