The amount of money raised and appropriated by the town during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $326.38; in 1862, $2,177.82; in 1863, $3,690.40; in 1864, $3,354.29; in 1865, $2,300.00. Total amount, $11,848.89. The ladies of Townsend furnished eight hundred dollars worth of clothing for the soldiers during the war, and in 1863 sent to the Townsend soldiers, stationed at that time in New York, a Thanksgiving dinner.
