[621] to five o'clock P. M. The purpose of the society was to furnish articles useful to the soldiers, whether in camp or in hospital. Articles of this description amounting in value to upwards of three thousand dollars were contributed during the war, and forwarded to the front through the agency of the Sanitary Commission. Immediately after the battle of Antietam Dr. George M. Moore was sent by the society to look after the sick and wounded belonging to the town, and to bring home the bodies of those who had fallen in battle.
