January 5th, A national salute was ordered to be fired on the 8th of January in commemoration of the battle of New Orleans, Jan. 8, 1815, and in honor of βMajor Anderson and his brave command at Fort Sumter.β January 21st, The services of the several military companies were tendered to the Governor, should troops be called for by the President. April 15th, The Sixth Regiment having been ordered to Washington, formed in Lowell, where it was addressed by leading citizens, and then proceeded to Boston. April 18th, Eight thousand dollars were appropriated for aid to the soldiers' families. The national flag was ordered to be displayed upon the public buildings. April 19th, Authority was given to gentlemen to organize new military companies. The attack upon the Sixth Regiment in Baltimore caused intense excitement in Lowell. New companies were immediately filled to the maximum. On the 21st, Sunday, βwar sermons were preached in the churches.β May 1st, Ten thousand dollars were appropriated
