[370] τῶν γάρ … ἐώλπει: 'for he deemed that it was on their account the Argonauts had come to his city'; cf. 4. 10. ἐώλπει shows metathesis of quantity for ἠόλπει; cf. ἐῴκει (189) for ἠοίκει. In Hom. ἔλπομαι often means 'to fancy.'
