Let the jubrian thing be echoed afar:
Virginia is free!--has retrieved her proud fame
And wiped from her escutcheon the tarnish of shame.
Hurra and Hurra ! Shout it louder and higher;
Ring it out on each hill-top, and each mountain.
Send it out on the breeze, roll it down to the sea!
The proud Old Dominion — she is free ! she is free !
Yes, Virginia is free ! Peal it higher ! still higher!
Free to loin her brave sisters in their infant empire;
Free from the Rall-spiltter's dasfardly reign;
Free from the foul plague that infests his domain;
Free from submission's ignominious shame;
Free to lay nobler trophies on the altars of Fame.
Free to unite.
With a will and a might,
In this glorious strife,
For freedom and life:
Free to build a grand empire on the ruins of the old.
And free her proud ensign o'er the world to unfold.
Ave, Virginia is free ! May she forever remain
As free as to day from oppression's vile chain !
And her glorious flag — may its folds ever be
As buoyant as to-day, and from tarnish as free !
