The proper spirit.
Under the recent proclamation of Govenor Latcher, calling out the millitia of the
State, the commandants of the regiment composed of the militia force of
Appomattox county, numbering some 75 men liable to duty, were criered out, when, upon an examination of the muster rolls, it was found that there was but
fifty-three who had not volunteered for the war. This is the spirit with which the people of
Southern Virginia are rallying to the defence of their homes, and the hope may be reasonably entertained that a few weeks will witness in the field, and ready for action, an invincible host of the tried and tree men of the ancient Common wealth.
This spirit is not confined alone to the South and East, but a similar response comes up from the
Valley and the
West.
