Trading with negroes

is an evil that the Courts cannot punish with too much severity. Nine out of every ten of the robberies in private families are committed by servants, who readily find purchasers for what they steal, and are thus encouraged in their robberies. The law imposes punishment on all who Seal with slaves without the written consent of their masters, and it also recognizes all negroes as slaves until they exhibit legal evidence of their freedom.

There are many strangers in this city who seem to know nothing of the laws of Virginia relative to negroes, and who, by consequence, traffic with them at all times.--There are others who do not care for the laws so they escape the penalties, and thus the owners of slaves are deeply wronged, and the morals of their servants ruined. Let the Courts apply the remedy to this class of evils at once before it becomes incurable.
