RAMACCA, LA MONTAGNA Catania, Sicily.

A hill of calcareous formation, 560 m high, to the W of the modern village. A gentle slope leads to the plateau at the summit. Various finds seem to document the existence of a Sikel center at the site; these include a necropolis with 41 rock-cut chamber tombs and cist graves (nearby, terracottas of the 6th and 5th c. B.C.), along the slopes of the hill, on the SE side. On the plateau there are graves cut into the rock as well as foundations for a large building and remains of walls (nearby, fragments of Ionic cups), and, at the summit of the hill, the foundations of another structure. The site is identified with Eryx by some scholars.
