GUEUGNON
Saône-et-Loire, France.
Situated
on the Arroux, a tributary of the Loire, 50 km downstream from Autun. In the Arroux Valley, at the place
called Le Vieux Fresne at Gueugnon, is a very large complex of potters' ovens, which has been under excavation since 1966. Products from this pottery supplied
Autun, in particular. The site was occupied from the
Augustan period but the first ovens found are slightly
later. The potters were active at least up to the end of
the 3d c. Manufacture especially of sigillate ware is well
attested through the middle of the 3d c. The many signatures found make it possible to follow the production at
this center and the way in which it spread. White clay
figurines were also manufactured. Most of the kilns were
sufficiently well preserved for a study of their type and
function.
