Sitalces

Σιτάλκης). A king of the Thracian tribe of the Odrysians. He was the son of Teres, whom he succeeded on the throne. He increased his dominions by successful wars, so that they ultimately comprised the whole territory from Abdera to the mouths of the Danube, and from Byzantium to the sources of the Strymon (Thuc. ii. 29, Thuc., 97). At the commencement of the Peloponnesian War he entered into an alliance with the Athenians, and in B.C. 429 he invaded Macedonia with a vast army, but was obliged to retire through failure of provisions, and was killed in B.C. 424 by the Triballi (Thuc.iv. 101).
