Smaragdus Mons

Σμάραγδον ὄρος). Now Jebel Zaburah; a mountain of Upper Egypt, near the coast of the Red Sea, north of Berenice. It obtained its name from its extensive mines for emeralds (smaragdi) (Pliny , Pliny H. N. xxxvii. 65).
