Andromĕda
(
Ἀνδρομέδη). The daughter of Cepheus, king of Aethiopia,
and Cassiopea. In consequence of her mother boasting that the beauty of her daughter surpassed
that of the Nereids, Poseidon sent a sea-monster to lay waste the country. The oracle of Ammon
promised deliverance if
Andromeda was given up to the monster, and Cepheus was obliged to
chain his daughter to a rock. Here she was found and saved by Perseus, who slew the monster
and obtained her as his wife. She had been previously promised to Phineus, and this gave rise
to the famous fight of Phineus and Perseus at the wedding, in which the former and all his
associates were slain. After her death she was placed among the stars.
