ASSU´RAE

ASSU´RAE (It. Ant. pp. 49, 51; Tab. Peut.; Ἄσσουρος, Ptol. 4.3.30; Oppidum Azuritanum, Plin. Nat. 5.4.4: Zanfour, Ru.), a considerable inland city of the Roman province Africa, in the N. of Byzacena, near the Bagradas and the confines of Numidia, 12 M. P. north of Tucca Terebinthina, and 20 M. P. south of Musti. It was the station of a Roman garrison. It is identified by inscriptions, one of which, on a gate or triumphal arch, dedicates the edifice to the emperor Septimius Severus, by the title divus optimus Severus, and to his wife Julia Domna, who is styled neater Augusti, which fixes the date of the inscription to the reign of Caracalla. There are other considerable ruins, among which are a small temple with Corinthian pilasters, and a theatre, the latter outside the walls. (Barth, Wanderungen, &c., pp. 229, 230).
