LEUCO´SIA

LEUCO´SIA (Λευκωσία, Λευκουσία), a city of Cyprus, which is mentioned only by Hierocles and the ecclesiastical historian Sozomen (H. E. 1.3, 10). The name is preserved in the modern Lefkosia or Nikosia, the capital of the island. (Engel, Kypros, vol. i. p. 150; Mariti, Viaggi, vol. i. p. 89; Pococke, Trav. in the East, vol. ii. pt. 1. p. 221.)
